Large leather smuggling operation stopped

A group of 89 people suspected of smuggling leather have been seized by Huangpu customs (Shanghai) in China. The local customs official is quoted as saying it is the largest case of leather smuggling ever found in China. 

The value of the goods smuggling has been reported as as high as RMB6.09 billion (US$976 million) with tax evasion of over RMB1 billion (US$160 million) over a four-year period. The smuggling is reported to started in 2011 with the smugglers providing lower declarations on imported raw hides and providing false documents to achieve huge profits. 89 people involved in the case have been arrested.
